TESSA ALEXANDER
Artist statement
I have a great interest in cultural anthropology, which has had a profound influence on my work. My motivation lays in creating work that appeals to the viewer in an emotional almost spiritual way. My paintings portray elements of humanity that are both celebrated and taken for granted or that are perceived as ugly, unacceptable or regressive but nonetheless coexisting within the fabric of everyday life.
With a background in fabric design my work utilizes the many facets of producing texture by layering different types of paper, decorative elements and diverse gel mediums onto my work surfaces before applying the colour. This results in my work appearing almost three dimensional and very rich in tones while at the same time working spontaneously to create a watery dreamlike feeling.
