SUSAN DAYAL

Date of Birth: November 8th, 1968

ARTIST STATEMENT

Susan Dayal graduated from Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design in 1992 with a BA (Hons) in Sculpture. Since then she has continued to develop and exhibit her work both locally and internationally. Although she is best known for her wirework, her portfolio also includes sculpture, photography, costumes and more recently painting and leather work.

In 1994 while living in Edinburgh Scotland, Dayal began to produce a line of handmade functional wire craft. This work is an extension of the sculptures from her art school days, which employs the Carnival technique of wire bending to create functional yet ornate objects. On returning to Trinidad in 1995, Susan began to further develop her wire craftwork. Some of the works include lights, mirrors, storage baskets and mobiles. This wirework is reminiscent of the wire craft of South Africa.

In 1998 Dayal was invited to participate in an International Artists Workshop in Namibia Africa. During that 2 weeks, Susan worked on woodcarving and painting, 2 disciplines that she hadn't done since she was a student. On returning to Trinidad, Dayal continued to paint and included painting in her 1998 solo exhibition. Her most recent works are inspired by the textile work of India and are better described as wall hangings than paintings. Apart from a painted image, Dayal makes the piece more ornate by embellishing the fabric frame with embroidery, sequins and other textile details. She will soon be exhibition in Venezuela. She has participated in two International artist workshops, the first in Namibia Africa and the second in Trinidad with Caribbean Contemporary Art.
